Tough Irishman Oisin Fagan was meet with boos from a largely pro Khan crowd as he made his entrance to the ring to face Amir Khan in the Excel Arena in London. It was apparent from the start that the hostile crowd was to be the least of his worries, Khan who had a 5 inch height, 5 inch reach and a distinct size advantage, wisely used his jab in a bid to keep the rough and ready Fagan from getting in close in the first round. Fagan, who has a low stance with knees bent and head down, likes to come forward and fight on the inside, and this was the game plan for the Khan fight, but although he had some success at the beginning with a few good body shots and overhand rights to the head, Khan quickly got the upper hand knocking Fagan down after 2 mins 45 seconds of round 1 with a right hand to the head. Bravely, Fagan got up only to be met with a blistering combination of head shots from Khan which again floored him just seconds later. Again Fagan got up but it was obvious from there that he was hurt, Khan's superior speed being just too much for him. At the bell Fagan looked disorientated and there was reason enough to pull Fagan out at that stage as it was obvious what way this fight was going to go.
Fagan, ever the proud fighter, came out for the second round with a focused Khan straight on top of him landing some vicious uppercuts, Fagan kept coming, hoping for one of his overhand rights to land cleanly on Khan's very questionable chin but Khan covered up enough to avoid a Fagan attack. Fagan did land some decent body blows but had to pay the price of coming in close by taking uppercuts and hurtfull body shots. Midway through the round, Fagan had blood coming from his nose and with no sign of Khan slowing down, Fagan's corner threw in the towel, not a moment too soon in my opinion. The referee had his back to Fagan's corner so did not see this, so Fagan, on the ropes, had to take 3 or 4 more big shots before referee Mickey Vann stepped in and stopped the fight at 1 min 36 seconds of round 2.
Oisin put up a very brave fight, but it was a bridge to far for the Irishman as all the odds were stacked against him. Khan's people should not be patting themselves on the back too much after this win as this was a one-sided affair from start to finish, and that is taking nothing from Oisin Fagan, who has a very respectable record despite having little amateur experience. Fagan can hold his head up high and can take heart from the fact that, despite all the disadvantages for him in this fight, he still managed to last longer than Khan did against Breidis Prescott!
