Andy Lee's management is in talks with Canadian Walid Smichet's camp to discuss a possible Lee V Smichet fight on St. Patrick's Weekend in Madison Square Garden.
Smichet took John Duddy 10 tough rounds last February in a fight Duddy just took on points. The news of a possible Paddy's Day weekend bout between Lee and Smichet comes on the same day that the Southern District Court of New York meet for a preliminary hearing, where Duddy filed suit to terminate his contract with Irish Ropes.
In an ironic twist, an article in the Irish Times makes reference to a possible fight between John Duddy and the Texan, Brian Vera, who stopped Andy Lee in March last year. If a deal can be struck between John Duddy and Irish Ropes for Duddy to take one last fight under their management and on the same March 16th card as fellow Irishman Lee, this fight could take place.
In a city which has a long tradition of Irish boxing, a Lee V Smichet/Duddy V Vera double would be one of the most exciting nights of Irish boxing for a long time.
This proposed March 16th card in Madison Square Garden is a big opportunity for John Duddy to get his career back on track, and a convincing win over Vera would no doubt start to rebuild his confidence after a terrible 2008.
Andy Lee also has a lot to prove, so a win over the tenacious Smichet would be a good place to start.
