In a surprise move, Eddie Hyland takes a huge step up when he meets EBU super featherweight champion, Sergey Gulyakevich on May 29th.
Gulyakevich won the title in December 2007, beating Leva Kirakosyan by unanimous decision. The Belarusian has since won a wide UD in a non title fight against Beka Sadjaia and successfully defended his EBU title against the undefeated fighter, Vitali Tajbert.
His only loss came in 2006 when he challenged Alex Arthur for the EBU super featherweight title. Gulyakevich was down on all scorecards when a cut resulting from an accidental clash of heads forced the stoppage.
Hyland will have to bring his A game if he is to claim victory over the more experienced Gulyakevich. To date Hyland has had went 10 rounds once, when he won the Irish super featherweight title against Kevin O' Hara. The step up in class and lack of experience may tell in this European title fight but the fact that he is willing to take on this difficult challenge says a lot for Hyland's confidence and ambition.
If Hyland manages to pull off the upset or indeed gives a good account of himself, this move will prove to have been a wise one.
If this title challenge has come too soon for him, he will at the very least gain experience fighting at a higher level.
